I like the fall

Filed under: Uncategorized — Administrator @ 9:42 pm

I like the fall.  It’s not that I am getting older and feel as if I have reached the fall cycle in my own life. No, I’ve always loved the fall, the colors, the smell and the brisk temperatures outside that require a sweatshirt or sweater.

We have a little time until it’s officially fall, but the temperatures at night are dropping into the fifties and the morning is damp and cool. The oppressive heat of summer begins to fade as fresh air now carries different allergens upon its breeze. Love it, can’t say enough about it. *sneeze*

I’ve a crush on October, one of the coolest months. S(H)e wears browns, oranges and muted purple in a coat that covers the countryside. S(H)e tricks you into thinking its going to stay warm, then teases with nights in the thirties. And at the end of the month, you celebrate all that is other-worldly, a day that the veil between what is normal and gentle collides with all that is paranormal and needy. And it’s so cool that we celebrate it. I love it so much that the story in Shaking Off the Dust takes place during the month of October. You see how I express my adoration.

It’s still a few weeks until then. I’m impatient to see the leaves in a riot of color. Every kind of chocolate is now available in small bite sized pieces, small enough to indulge, but not over indulge. (Assuming I had that kind of will power.) The costumes for Halloween are out for view and never in my size. Oh well, I am just the gal that answers the door and hands out the good stuff.

The fall includes all of the best holidays too!  I can give thanks before I get my Christmas list or presents. Cool and freaky sales happen every weekend from November till Christmas. Seriously, what’s not to like about fall? This fall is an even bigger celebration, because my first ever published book comes out in Print the end of November, so it’s a double thank you to the universe. I set up a book signing with my local Barnes and Nobles this week, so it’s all kinds of firsts. I believe that I will be creating my own special holiday and hope it becomes an annual event. I will call it the dreams to fruition day.

What day is that for each of you? Tell me about your most adored month or day.

  1. I think Autumn is my favourite season of all as well.

The hot temperatures of summer, for the most part anyway, are a thing of the past. The colours of the leaves, while they don’t last anywhere near long enough, are splendid and a visual feast of which I never tire. And life seems to once again slow down ~ at least once school is back in and the kids settled.

As for my favourite day and or month? That’s more difficult. I guess a day where the family all gets together and celebrates whichever season it is, but most of all we’re celebrating us. Living here in Edmonton are my mom, one of my brothers (two others are far away ~ one in PEI and the youngest in England) and his family, and both of my sisters and one sister’s family. When we have the opportunity to all get together, the *kids* ~ for want of a better term ~ all have a marvelous time.

So while I may not have a set day that I consider a favourite, there are a few days in the year where I have much thankfulness.

Oh, and Rhianna, I’ve pre-ordered Shaking Off the Dust so that I can have it in print as well. Can hardly wait!

  2. Thanks Kathy!

You hit upon the very thing that I like best about fall and that is the slowing down of life. The sense of urgency is gone, the blazing heat of summer is also gone. I like that it’s dark early and the grass doesn’t have to be mowed as often.

  3. I like fall (October) best because:

    1. I’m fat and I get to wear bulky clothes that cover me up.

    2. I don’t have to mow the lawn or do garden work anymore, which I hate.

    3. I prefer cool, darker days and fall means that the heat and all that eye hurting bright sun is over with.

    4. I like to sleep in a cool/cold room and snuggle under a nice down quilt. And I like snuggling under a blanket with DH while watching TV or reading.

    5. The new season starts on TV and reruns are over.

    6. More crappy weather means that I don’t have to feel guilty about staying inside and reading or wasting time on the net.

    7. The movie theaters are empty during matinee times.

When it starts heading into Nov. then I have to deal with the holidays, which means stress to me. Including my yearly trip to Hawaii. I know, poor me.

I know it’s not what you asked exactly, but my favorite day is Thurs. because it’s my first day off every week and I know I’ll have 4 full days to do whatever I want.

Hey congrats on your book coming out. Good luck on your book signing event. I’m sure you’ll sell a whole bunch and get some new fans. How exciting for you!

  4. Hi Leah!

I agree with all your reasons and more. Try not to be too depressed and stressed by that Hawaii-SNORT.

I’m having some computer woes, so if you don’t hear back from me within a day, put it down to that. Though, I’ve found a work around.

Yeah, it sounds good, but it’s– we get up, go to MIL’s house and hang out in no air-con heat of 90 degrees, then go to lunch. Back to hotel for an hour or two and then back to MIL’s-out to dinner-back to hot house and sit talking until 10pm and back to hotel. E-ve-ry day.

I love my MIL. Truly, she’s a warm, beautiful, fun woman whom I’m totally in love with and who actually treats me more like a daughter than my own mom, but it’s not a vacation. And this year, her B-day is on Thanksgiving, so we will be there for that and have to go to DH’s sister’s DH’s huge, huge family get-together.

This all equals major stress to me. Not a fun vaca in which DH and I can just kick back and have fun and relax. And we do this every year, so it’s just not that exciting anymore.

Don’t you just love how I hijacked your blog to complain? LOL
You can start to feel sorry for me now. LOL

  6. Okay, no tears here, but I do understand the stress thing. And the heat issue is a problem, especially when you are from the Northwest. Feel free to high jack my blog anytime. I like to think of it as a communal blog, where we all discuss what ever the subject happens to be, even if it’s not the topic we start out with. That is very cool.

Your DH’s family sounds lovely. But, can they play scrabble?
